Inclusion Criteria

Safespaces for Women provides specialist residential support for adult women aged 18 years and over who require a safe, trauma-informed environment to support their mental health, wellbeing and independence. We can support women who:

  • Have a diagnosed mental health condition, including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, PTSD, complex trauma and ABI
  • Require residential support to maintain their wellbeing and reduce the risk of hospital admission.
  • May have a history of self-harm, suicidal ideation or emotional dysregulation where risks can be safely managed within a residential setting.
  • Require support with medication management and engagement with community mental health services.
  • Need support to develop daily living skills, independence and social inclusion.
  • Have autism spectrum disorder and/or ADHD alongside mental health needs.
  • Are subject to Community Treatment Orders (CTOs), conditional discharge arrangements or other community-based frameworks where risks can be safely managed.
  • Require support following discharge from hospital, rehabilitation services or other residential placements.
  • May be subject to Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) or Court of Protection arrangements where Safespaces can meet their assessed needs.
  • Are willing to engage with staff and support planning to a reasonable degree.

Exclusion Criteria

Safespaces for Women may be unable to support individuals whose needs exceed the scope of a residential mental health service. This may include individuals who:

  • Require nursing care on a 24-hour basis that cannot be safely provided through community health services.
  • Present with a level of aggression, violence or offending behaviour that places other residents, staff or the wider community at significant risk.
  • Present with active fire-setting behaviours that cannot be safely managed within the environment.
  • Require a secure, locked or forensic setting.
  • Have unmanaged substance or alcohol dependence that would significantly impact the safety and wellbeing of other residents.
  • Have primary needs relating to dementia or severe cognitive impairment requiring specialist dementia services.
  • Require continuous one-to-one supervision that cannot be safely commissioned or provided.
  • Present with behaviours that create an ongoing and unmanageable safeguarding risk to other residents.
  • Have acute physical healthcare needs requiring ongoing hospital-level treatment.
  • Are unwilling to engage with any assessment process required to determine whether Safespaces can safely meet their needs.

Assessment Process

All referrals are assessed on an individual basis. Safespaces recognises that every person is unique, and decisions are made following a comprehensive review of risks, strengths, support needs and compatibility with existing residents. The safety, wellbeing and recovery of both the individual and the wider resident group remain central to all admission decisions
